WIDNES’ 1975 Challenge Cup winners will be back on parade at Wembley for this year’s final.
The final in question, which saw the then Chemics beat Warrington 14-7, featured several of the sport’s most famous names from that era – including Eric Hughes, Reg Bowden, Jim Mills, John Bevan, Dave Chisnall and Mike Nicholas.
Players from the match will be presented to the crowd before kick-off at the Wembley showpiece on Saturday, August 29.
RFL’s marketing manager, Phil Williams said: “The RFL is delighted to announce the 1975 final has been chosen to be the celebrated match at this season’s Carnegie Challenge Cup final at Wembley.
“The 1975 match was a tremendous contest and contained the kind of action and the drama that makes the Challenge Cup final at Wembley such a special part of the sport’s annual calendar.”
He added: “We look forward to celebrating this event on a day that is set to create another set of very special memories for everybody involved”.
In future seasons, other previous finals will be celebrated in a similar way.
The celebrations were successfully introduced last season when the 1968 ‘watersplash’ match was commemorated.
The RFL will announce full details of the 1975 Challenge Cup final celebrations and 2009 Wembley pre-match entertainment in due course.
Meanwhile, tickets for the final are still available, with prices starting from £21.
