Former Widnes captain Martin Crompton rings changes as coach of Blackpool Panthers for Vikings reunion in Lancashire

BLACKPOOL Panthers coach and former Widnes Vikings captain Martin Crompton is poised to wield the axe for Sunday’s Northern Rail Cup group game between the clubs in Lancashire.

Crompton said of last week’s 28-26 defeat at Rochdale: “That was the worst performance we’ve put in this year, including all the pre-season friendlies.

“I was very disappointed and there will be a lot of changes against Widnes.”

He added: “It’s an opportunity for myself to send a message about what’s not acceptable. At the same time, I’ve also got six or seven players who haven’t had a game yet.

“The players know I’m a fair chap and it’s only right that other guys are given an opportunity.”

Widnes caretaker John Stankevitch has been dealt a major blow after Iain Morrison was forced to undergo surgery on a shin problem. He is facing anywhere between six weeks and four months on the sidelines.

However, Dean Gaskell is ready for selection following an ankle injury.

Stankevitch said: “We were pleased with last week’s performance but there’s still a lot to work on.

“Blackpool have got a lot of Widnes connections, either through guys who played here or others that live in the town, and we know it will be a tough encounter.”
