Steve McCormack leaves head coach job after Widnes Vikings defeat to Oldham

SPEAKING immediately after the game, Steve McCormack said: “That performance wasn’t good enough and we’ve got to learn to play together a bit more.

“We were behind the eight ball after Loz was sent off and we gave Oldham too much of a start.

“You always want to win your first game and we’ll have to learn from our mistakes.

“But it was a reality check for us to see that if we don’t play well against good sides like Oldham, then we’ll get beat.”

When asked about the performance of referee James Child, McCormack added: “I didn’t see the red card incident so I can’t comment, but some of his other decisions were baffling.

“But we still got in a position to win the game and we have no one to blame but ourselves.”

McCormack continued: “Credit to Oldham. They’re a good team with some good players and they’re favourites for Championship One.”

Widnes have three more games in the group stages, starting this Saturday evening when Gateshead visit Stobart Stadium Halton (ko 6pm).

In the first week in March, they face two away trips to round off their four qualifying matches.

They go to Blackpool on Sunday, March 1 and there is a quick turnaround to Wednesday of the same week for the rearranged Barrow trip.
