Widnes Vikings: Iain Morrison is king of Scotland

VIKINGS’ Iain Morrison has achieved a landmark of his own in an historic year for Scottish RL.

The second rower has been named the country’s player of the year and adds the Dave Valentine Award to the two accolades landed at club level in 2008.

Morrison crowned his first season with Widnes by landing their Stobart Player of the Year and Coaches’ PoY prizes.

This latest honour recognises the former London, Huddersfield and Hull KR man’s World Cup displays in Australia.

Scotland earned their first ever victory in the competition, defeating eventual semi-finalists Fiji.

Morrison was singled out by Scotland’s management team of Steve McCormack, assistant Dave Rotheram and manager Richard Thewlis.

McCormack said: “Iain was the standout performer for Scotland throughout the World Cup and is a clear winner.

“His attitude and application on and off the field were superb and he set an example for others to follow.”

The Karalius Cup will be at stake in Widnes Vikings’ final pre-season trial game.

St Helens have been confirmed as visitors to Stobart Stadium Halton on Sunday, February 1.

The winners will be presented with the trophy in memory of former Widnes and Saints legend Vince Karalius, who died last month.
