SCOTLAND boss Steve McCormack has revealed being written off ahead of the historic 18-16 defeat of Fiji had spurred them on.
Rugby league north of the border has received a tremendous boost in the eyes of the national team and Widnes Vikings head coach.
Today’s success at Bluetongue Stadium saw Scotland finish second in Pool B and gave them their first ever
win in a Rugby League World Cup.
“I'm very proud tonight – these boys have created a little bit of history,” said McCormack.
“Rugby league is obviously a developing sport in Scotland and this will give it a boost.
“We have been described as minnows all week and that we wouldn't have a chance in this game.
“We took that quite personally as a group of Scotland coaching staff and players.
“People back in Scotland will see that and have got a team to be proud of.”
McCormack added: “The amount of defending we had to do and considering the points conceded, it was a fantastic effort.
“We did it tough but I couldn't be a prouder coach at the moment.”
Scotland now play second-placed Pool 3 team, Tonga, at Browne Park, Rockhampton, in three days time.
“We have earned this trip to Rockhampton and it is going to be an exciting adventure for us,” added McCormack.
