Vikings chase mystery men

THE Vikings are chasing three international stars to bolster their end-of-season push and give the Rugby Football League a timely reminder of their Super League membership credentials in 2009.

Widnes head coach Steve McCormack wouldn’t be drawn into speculation but sporting director Terry O’Connor is in talks with players Down Under with a view to them joining before July’s licence decision.

Former Widnes boss Frank Endacott, an agent for some of the biggest players in the NRL, arrives in the UK in two weeks’ time and it’s believed a Kiwi international on Happy Frank’s books is one of the targets.

McCormack said: “Tez is talking to a lot of people in Australia and New Zealand but that is as far as it goes.

“We won’t comment on speculation about different names but a lot of clubs chasing a licence are talking to players so we are not alone.

“Terry is dealing with it all but I can confirm we have spoken to some quality players about the possibility of playing for Widnes Vikings either this season or the next.”

It’s believed two other potential signings were on show in last night’s State of Origin battle between New South Wales and Queensland.

Meanwhile, McCormack claims he is more focused on Saturday’s crunch Northern Rail quarter-final clash with Celtic Crusaders in Bridgend.

He said: “Preparations couldn’t be better and we are looking forward to it. We are the holders of this cup and we want to keep it at Stobart Stadium Halton.

“We have it all to do going down there as Celtic are playing some good stuff and have some very talented players.”

The Vikings, who travel down tomorrow afternoon, will still be without centre Jason Crookes, who missed the win over Sheffield Eagles with a back injury sustained in a car accident.

McCormack reassured Vikings fans Crookes’ injury isn’t too serious as the youngster joined Tommy Gallagher and Tim Hartley on the casualty list.

Paul Noone is back in light training after surgery and could return in time for Widnes’ clashes with Halifax on June 8 or Salford City Reds on June 19.
