League is top priority, says Steve Mac

FORGET all about the Challenge Cup, Widnes coach Steve McCormack reckons Sunday’s home National League One encounter against Sheffield Eagles is the most important game of the season so far.

“We’re looking to bounce back from the defeat against Hull and continue with our priority, which is climbing up the Co-operative National League One table,” he said.

Sam Barlow and Richard Fletcher are both back in contention for Widnes after being cup-tied against the Super Leaguers from KC Stadium.

However, Steve McCormack will be without Tommy Gallagher (thumb), Paul Noone (ankle) and Tim Hartley (ankle).

Sheffield coach Mark Aston could hand a debut to former Bradford Bulls Academy forward Alex Szostak.

Aston said: “He’s got a really good attitude. He’s a first-class young lad who wants to play at the highest level possible. He’s the kind of player that I love to work with.”

However, one player who will not feature is hooker Craig Cook, who has returned to Australia.
