Late shows are no fluke – coach

WIDNES Vikings team boss Steve McCormack insists ahead of Sunday’s Northern Rail Cup visit of Sheffield Eagles (ko 3pm) his side's ability to snatch late wins is a sign of the quality in his squad.

The Vikings produced a last-minute try against Whitehaven on Sunday, nine days after achieving a similar victory against Batley.

Head coach McCormack said: “I think it's the sign of a good side.

“Some people might say it's lucky – when it happens once, maybe that is, but twice isn't.

“The players showed they can perform under a lot of tension and anxiety.”

Eagles' coach Mark Aston could be boosted by the returns of Gavin Brown and Richard Newlove for the trip to Stobart Stadium Halton while Matthew Whitaker could be in line for his Sheffield debut.

Aston said: “I won't be switching the squad (from last week). I want to go through to the quarter-finals.

“We have three training sessions before we go to Widnes and some might say 'rest people' but we want to go as far as we can in this competition.”
