VIKINGS owner-chairman Steve O’Connor says the club must swallow the bitter pill of the nine-point deduction.
He said: “We’re obviously disappointed to be docked points for the start of the season but accept this as being the RFL’s normal course of action following a club being placed into administration.
“However, we’re confident we can establish a squad that can overcome this hurdle and take Vikings on to great success.”
O’Connor launched his successful takeover of the club in partnership with Halton Borough Council.
He added: “We have lost a lot of preparation time, which was unavoidable, but now all our efforts will be channelled to get the squad in shape.
“We must overcome this points deficit and make a serious challenge for the Co-Operative National League 1 championship.”
Tony McDermott, Halton council leader, said: “Securing clearance for league membership is a vital step in the regeneration of the club and our aim to see Widnes as a leading force in rugby league again.”
Vikings chief executive Pete Barrow hopes fans will understand the reason for postponing the customary Boxing Day derby against Warrington.
He said: “We felt it would be unfair on Steve and the players to schedule such a tough introductory match for them on December 26 when our opponents would have the benefit of an uninterrupted pre-season.
I realise our fans will be disappointed. It is a decision we haven’t taken lightly and is in the best interests of the club.”
Widnes Vikings hope to issue details of pre-season friendly fixtures and more signings in the ‘near future’.
