Widnes Moorfield 24 Walney Central 0

MOORFIELD put down a marker for the new Division One campaign by nilling a side which had beaten them twice last season.

The hosts settled quickly once Paul Argent had opened the scoring, Danny Wood conver ting.

Wood's penalty goal stretched the lead to eight but poor ball control at times saw them bomb a couple of chances before David Lloyd forced his way over for Danny Wood to convert into a 14-0 interval lead.

Playing down the slope upon the resumption, Moorfield could have scored more than they did and also need to tidy up their penalty account.

However, a good passing move saw John McDonald squeeze over at the corner.

Coach Geoff Jackson rotated his forwards well - Ste Cavanagh, Ste Davies, Chris Freeman plus new signings Mick Donnelly and Mark Birmingham getting through a lot of work while Matty Farrell and the Wood brothers orchestrated the backs.

The final try came when old hands Gary Richardson and Paul Davies made an opening for Danny Wood to sidestep over by the posts.

The scorer converted for a more than satisfactory scoreline. Unfor tunately, Moorfield A team's game at Bank Quay was postponed due to player problems at the Warrington club.

Widnes Moorfield make the journey to Oldham St Anne's this Saturday.

The seconds entertain Wigan St Cuthbert's A (ko 2.30pm). All players should meet at MS&SC for 12.30pm latest.

West Bank Swans 30, Hindpool 6: Swans produced a strong, workmanlike performance on Division Three debut to grind down plucky Barrow visitors.

The hosts pulled off some great attacking plays while Hindpool were much more conservative with ball in hand. Equal to the attack, Swans' defence was ruthless as they piled two and three into the tackle to largely keep Hindpool in their own territory.

Swans went in at the break 18-0 up with tries from outstanding pair Dave Patterson (2) and Adam Elwell, Leon Phillips converting all.

In the second half, fatigue set in around the hour mark. Hindpool stuck to their task well, making Swans fight for every ball.

Further tries were added by centre Karl Fletcher, wingman Tom Atkins with a great interception and the deserving Johnny Mark.

Overall it was a great start but tougher challenges lie ahead.

Cheshire Oak (Bacon Products) MoM went to Phillips, followed by Patterson and Chris Syers.
