Widnes 64 Wigan St Judes 12
VIKINGS stormed into the Carnegie Challenge Cup fourth round with a 12-try demolition of amateur side St Judes, winning 64-12.
The visitors produced a plucky performance and the final scoreline doesn’t do justice to Saints who made a dream start by taking an early lead.
Second-row Lee Maiden was the tryscorer in the seventh minute with Dave Picton’s goal giving the visitors a surprise 6-0 advantage.
It took the Vikings a while to get into their stride but when they did, the points started to flow.
Loose-forward Dave Allen started things off and he was quickly followed over the whitewash by Anthony Thackeray to give Widnes a 10-6 lead.
Second row Lee Doran stormed 50 yards for the next score and tries from Scott Yates and Dave Houghton gave Widnes a 26-6 interval cushion.
A Shane Grady try early in the second period was more than matched by a six-pointer for Judes centre Darley King but Widnes coasted away in the latter stages.
Youngster Danny Hulme collected a brace as did the more experienced Richard Varkulis.
Allen became the third man to register a double for the Vikings with Thomas Coyle also crossing. Grady finished with eight goals to his credit.
Vikings will host French side Lezignan in round four of the Challenge Cup on Sunday, April 18.
