RUNCORN TOWN assistant manager Danny Salt has called on the club’s players to build on Tuesday’s superb win at North West Counties League Premier Division leaders Ramsbottom United.
The number two watched on as Town recorded their first away win since December with a 2-1 triumph at the Harry WIlliams Riverside Stadium.
And he now wants the squad to use the result as fuel for an assault on promotion.
“If the players don’t excel from that win and show what they are capable of they need to take a look at themselves,” said Salt.
“For us to win it, it’s going to be a big task, so how we apply ourselves will be key.
“If our workrate is good and we play for each other, we won’t be far off.
“But the lads have to put the work in and me and Simon (Burton) have to get us up for it.
“If you go on a good run of five or six wins on the bounce you’ve got a great chance.
“We’re not saying we’re going to win the league, but we’re in with a shout.
“Our league position is good. It’s nice to be in there.
“We’re not at the top like we were a couple of months ago, but we’re nicely in the pack and we’ve got a good chance of winning it.
“Tuesday night’s win helped a number of teams and made things a bit tighter.”
Boss Burton admitted he was “over the moon” with his side’s midweek win and described the performance of his players as “magnificent”.
Salt echoed the thoughts of the manager, and revealed motivation was plentiful in the away dressing room after Town’s players were taunted after defeat to Ramsbottom just last month.
Salt added: “I think getting beat by them a few weeks ago spurred us on.
“The Rammy lads were singing in the dressing room after the game so it made our team talk easy and it’s nice to get a bit of revenge.
“We are really chuffed with it. It was a great performance from one to 17 and when the lads got back in the changing room they were absolutely dead on their feet.
“That’s only happened a few times but they were sat there with nothing left. It’s nice to see and I think if you asked anyone at Ramsbottom they’d say we deserved it.”
