Runcorn Linnets aim for consistency over Christmas

FOCUS and consistency from his players would make for a good Christmas for Runcorn Linnets’ boss Paul McNally.

Linnets ended a run of six games without a win when seeing off Winsford United by a single goal on Saturday, and McNally believes increased focus was at the heart of his side’s display.

“It was a good performance on Saturday,” said McNally.

“The lads did a tremendous job after being poor against AFC Liverpool.

“They knew they’d let themselves and other people at the club down against AFC Liverpool but they re-grouped and put in a great performance.

“Every one of the lads tries 100% every time they go out there. It just seemed to be a little bit more focused on Saturday. I think when people look at the league and see you’re in eighth or ninth, they’re a lot happier, but my stance has always been the need for consistency. If you can win three or four games in a row, you can jump a long way in this league.”

McNally’s men sit in 11th ahead of the weekend’s trip to sixth-placed Flixton, and Linnets will need to replicate their Winsford display if they are to profit against a side who acquitted themselves well when drawing 2-2 at the Millbank Linnets Stadium in August.

Flixton were the first side to take points off McNally’s men this term, and the boss knows his side face a tough task in the return meeting.

McNally added: “I’d say they are the best side we’ve played this season. They were tremendous when they came to our place and were by far the better team for an hour. We were lucky to get a 2-2 out of it. They’re just a good unit with as never say die attitude and they work hard for one another, so it will be tough.”
