Runcorn Linnets manager Steve Wilkes predicts tough Silsden test in Vodkat League Cup semi-finals

Runcorn Linnets 3 AFC Fylde 1 (after extra-time)

MANAGER Steve Wilkes saluted his players for working overtime on a job well done but not yet completed.

Even the most optimistic Linnets fan would have struggled to predict victory over the odds-on title favourites.

But Linnets ran the footballing version of a marathon to book a first-time place in the Vodkat League’s Challenge Cup semi-finals.

“It has given us a great chance now of getting some silverware but we can’t think we’ve done all the hard work now,” stressed Wilkes.

“We’ve got a massive game against Silsden in the semi-final and it will be tough.”

The 120-minute tie against Fylde had also been held up for an hour and didn’t finish until well past 6pm after visiting skipper Dougie Shaw had been struck down by a back injury.

Fears of spinal damage meant every possible precaution had to be taken while an ambulance was awaited.

Fortunately, there appears to have been no lasting damage.

“I’m glad the lad was all right,” said Wilkes. “He was back at home by Saturday night and I spoke to him on Sunday.

“He just thinks it is badly bruised.”

A thrilling cup-tie looked like ending in heartache for Linnets as sub Paul Easwtood headed Fylde in front (81).

But Linnets’ resolve and response saw them level within a minute.

Clive Brown’s towering header from a long free-kick was the first of his two goals before limping off.

His second came from an instinctive rebound to sub Danny Stubberfield’s blocked shot at a corner (107 mins).

Rob Whyte, singled out by Wilkes for his excellent showing when promoted into his natural striking position, completed a stunning victory. With five minutes left, he raced clear of the defence to lash high into the net.
