Goshawk A (Ann Faulkner 21-3) reduced the gap to 12 chalks with a home win over Helsby D.
Grapes A (George Gibson 21-8) are losing ground in third after a one-chalk defeat at Norton Arms B (Jeff Hughes 21-5).
Red Lion B (John Brooker 21-2) were full-house home winners over depleted Pavilions A, who stay rock bottom.
Tigers Head A just got the better of Castle Park A, despite a 21-4 card from Peter Murray.
Division Two leaders Halton RBL A (Derek Dixon 21-9) were pegged back at Pavilions B (Harry Wilson 21-5) while Egerton A (George Aspinwall 21-3, Maurice Hambleton and Dave Pryce both 21-7) jumped to second with a good win at Helsby A, whose best winner was Alan Hughes (21-5).
Tomorrow sees matches in the Fred Rogers Cup second round, as follows: Helsby D 25 v Helsby A 50 at Kingswood, Goshawk B 35 v Chetwode A 35 at Subscription, Kingswood B 25 v Halton RBL A 50 at Castle Park, Egerton A 40 v Subscription B 50 at War Memorial.
Entries for the Frodsham Merit must be received by this weekend.
