Ace Mayers delights at the double

INTERNATIONAL Jamie Mayers is Halton’s sportsperson of the year for the second time.

Also the winner in 2006, the now 34-year-old Runcorn Canoe Club chairman is the highest-ranking North West paddler for both marathon and sprint kayaking.

For the last three years, he has represented the region at the National Hasler Trophy finals.

Having finished second at this year’s 19-mile Frank Luzmore race on the River Thames he had a fifth-placed finish for Great Britain at the Pontevedra K4 (four man) race in Spain.

He took third places at last year’s National Marathon Championships and the National Sprint Championships earlier in 2008, both at K2.

James, who achieved two top-10 finishes in World Cup events in 2006, has been in his sport for about 20 years.

While undertaking his own training he provides the majority of coaching at his club’s five meetings per week.

His commitment to personal development has seen him attend the British Canoe Union’s training weekends in December and January.

James is also working towards the BCU’s Level Four coaching badge, having already achieved their level 2 placid water and bell boat helms qualifications.

He organises competition entries for his fellow Runcorn members, arranges transportation of boats and equipment while assisting with coaching canoeists at other clubs such as Chester and Macclesfield.

James’ commitment to creating a new wave of competitors also extends to him running the Lightning North West Series races for juniors.

The roofer balances all this with full-time employment and raising a young family.

He said: “Runcorn Canoe Club is really growing and canoeing is getting stronger in the North West, which is good for the sport.”
