A CHILDREN’S charity has spoken of its concern after the Weekly News revealed that the number of youngsters being exposed to potential paedophiles has rocketed.
The National Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Children (NSPCC) said about one in three viewers of indecent images of children also carry out sexual abuse in person.
An NSPCC spokeswoman added that those who look at or watch abuse online must remember that real victims are involved.
The charity spoke out after the Weekly News published shocking figures from a Halton Borough Council report that said social services caseloads relating to sex abuse against children had leaped fivefold over the past year. The document attributed some of the increase to a rise in viewers of child pornography.
Between 2011-2012, referrals for potential sex abuse victims rose from 17 cases to 88, putting pressure on social workers who are tasked with monitoring children’s safety.
The NSPCC urged residents to contact it if they are worried about a child.
The spokeswoman said: “Sex abuse causes untold harm to many children who need protection and specialist treatment to help them rebuild their lives.
“The circulation of indecent images online is a major problem that needs to be tackled urgently.
“We must not forget the fact that behind each abusive image is a real child who has been sexually assaulted.
“From our own research we know that around one in three of those convicted of possessing child abuse images has also committed other serious sex offences against children.
“So it’s vital these people are identified and brought to the attention of the authorities.
“Just as importantly the young victims must get therapeutic treatment to help them overcome their terrible ordeals.”
