Norton Priory in Runcorn prepares for fresh lottery bid

EUROPE’S largest archaeological monastic site is preparing to exorcise its ghosts of two years ago and compete for lottery cash in Runcorn.

Norton Priory said the grant would pay for bigger and better display facilities.

The move would enable it open its vault of previously unseen treasures including medieval skulls, coffins, metal work, wood carving, pottery, glass and ornate tiles.

Allison Kirk, historian and Norton Priory community learning manager, said the funds would also help to restore the medieval undercroft and boost visitor activities, including beginners’ archaeology events.

The organisation’s previous attempt was rejected, but staff are confident that they learned from the process and will submit a stronger application.

Bid backers include university academics and English Heritage researcher Dr David Robinson.

Norton Priory is Europe’s largest archaeological monastic site. It was founded in 1134 and was home to an order of Augustinian canons.

It is now a tourist attraction with extensive grounds and woods and a busy events calendar including jazz concerts, medieval days and curio markets.

Mrs Kirk said: “We really want to improve access to the unique collection of artifacts found on site that date back over 700 years.

“We have such beautiful objects that the current building can’t make the most of.

“We want to be really innovative and environmentally sound with the bid

“We’re not just a historical site, we’re a place of natural interest and beauty.”

She added: “We’re still in the planning process and want staff and volunteers to really think outside the box.

“One of the best ways for people to show support is to come down and visit us.”
