Cake maker from Moore Lane, Widnes, featured on popular Channel 4 programme My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding

A TALENTED cake maker from Widnes got a slice of the action on popular Channel 4 show My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.

Cakes By Kerry owner Kerry Kirchin made one of the extravagant wedding cakes featured on the controversial programme last week.

The episode had a peak audience of 7.4m viewers, Channel 4’s highest ratings since Big Brother in 2008.

Since starting her own business six years ago, Kerry has moved up a tier and now employs three staff at her council-owned Moor Lane shop.

The 33-year-old was one of several entrepreneurs to take advantage of Halton Borough Council’s small business start-up scheme, which helped her find her current low rent start-up unit.

Kerry is now due to move into her own, larger premises in Widnes town centre later this year.

Kerry comes from a family of bakers which have owned and run Kirchins Bakery in Widnes for 20 years.

She said: “Moor Lane was an ideal place for me to start up my business.

“The rent was low and I had the freedom to adapt the unit to suit my needs.

“It also has plenty of parking for my customers and it is easy to find.”

The council still has units available for start-up businesses at Moore Lane Business Centre in Widnes and Dewar Court in Runcorn.

Halton Borough Council's executive board member for property services, Cllr Mike Wharton, said: “It can be daunting moving into your own premises; however, we aim to make it as easy as possible.

“From your initial enquiry, the council’s property services team will identify your specific needs, arrange viewings for suitable properties and try to ensure a smooth and speedy move into your own premises.”
