TWO brothers who lost their football-mad father to cancer began their own fundraising road to Wembley at Runcorn on Saturday.
Runcorn Linnets’ FA Cup clash with AFC Emley was the start of a nine-month charity drive by Richard Knowles and his brother Robert, who hope to raise £5,000 for Cancer Research by collecting at every round of this season’s competition.
Richard, 35, of Frodsham, started his campaign with the extra preliminary round against AFC Emley at Wincham Park, Northwich – which the Linnets won 4-1 – and will follow the winning team in each round until the final.
Richard dreamed up the idea with his brother in 2005 but has only now put his plans into reality – although, due to the birth of his first son, Robert is unable to join him until later in the campaign.
Richard, who will be paying all his own expenses, is hoping the campaign gathers momentum along the way.
He said: “Like many people, cancer has had a direct impact on my life, as my father died when my brother and I were very young.
“He was a great footballer and this seems an appropriate way to raise money.”
Richard said he had a ‘dry run’ last season, and expects he will be travelling up and down the country to see all 14 matches – plus replays, although the very early rounds will be in the North West.
He said: “There would have been three replays last year, so I’m hoping there won’t be too many this time around.”
