MP Derek Twigg has called for Mersey Gateway Project Discounts

HALTON MP Derek Twigg said he hopes residents will benefit from either free crossing or ‘significant’ discounts if the scheme is rubber stamped.

Speaking at the public inquiry, Mr Twigg voiced his backing for the Mersey Gateway, adding that he had first hand experience of congestion on the existing Silver Jubilee crossing.

He said: “I have lived in Widnes all my life and prior to becoming an MP I was employed as a civil servant in Runcorn.

“I had to cross the Silver Jubilee Bridge every weekday and have therefore personally experienced congestion many times since the late 1970s.

He added that a second crossing would offer greater hope for the future in light of Halton’s declining industry.

He said: “A second crossing is crucial to future economic growth both within Halton and the sub region.

“Halton has suffered from the decline over the last 25 years of its traditional industries.

“There are a number of local and regionally significant developments within Halton which offer great hope for the future, such as the science park development at Daresbury, the rail freight development at Ditton and Widnes Waterfront.

“Good transport links are essential to their success.”

He added: “ I would prefer to have a toll free bridge, particularly for Halton residents, but I am aware this is currently not Government policy.

“I hope that a scheme can be developed which will allow my constituents to travel toll free or benefit from significant discounts.”
