Ian Hunt of engineering firm Gifford hails design of Mersey Gateway bridge

DESIGNERS behind the bridge say it will be a ‘unique structure’ that will become synonymous with Halton.

Ian Hunt, of Gifford, the firm behind the design of the proposed 2.13km structure, said the design would lead to improved transport links in the borough.

And he said the look of the bridge had been an important part of the design process.

He said: “Design is a fusion between form and function.

“It is essential that a new piece of infrastructure performs its function entirely satisfactorily in terms of safety and performance objectives.

“It is also highly desirable that it achieves that with a style that is visually pleasing.

“This is particularly true for bridges.”

Mr Hunt said the design would incorporate a lower deck for a possible future rail system.

He added: “The design of the works submitted for consent has taken due regard of the natural and built environment of Halton.

“It also permits the improvement of public transport within Halton, and provides much improved conditions for cyclists and pedestrians.”
