ANGRY Halton residents campaigning against the proposed routes for the Mersey Gateway have launched a protest website.
Martin Ramsden, acting as spokesman for the as yet unnamed group, said members actually support a second bridge.
But they claim any extra traffic, particularly heavy goods vehicles, should be diverted along Daresbury expressway.
He claimed extra traffic on the central expressway would increase noise and air pollution for nearby residents.
He said his concerns relate to a medical watchdog report estimating between 12,000-24,000 vulnerable UK residents’ deaths are ‘brought forward’ each year because of air pollution.
He added members have various ideas for diverting traffic away from the central expressway.
The group will use the website www.merseycrossing.webs.com to publicise forthcoming meetings and host forums.
Mersey Crossing has posted 300-500 leaflets to homes near the central expressway and letters to 55 councillors inviting them along.
At least two councillors have agreed to attend the meeting – Cllrs Ellen Cargill and Harry Howard, who both represent Halton Castle ward.
The group has also presented its argument to the Government in a “statement of case” document.
Bridge project officials maintain that air quality will improve as a result of the Mersey Gateway, and its associated sustainable transport initiatives.
But Mr Ramsden disagrees.
He said: “They’re going to destroy our air quality.
“Normally they would build a by-pass like they did in Alderley Edge to stop traffic passing through.”
