Groundbreaking research on elder abuse

LIVERPOOL University has teamed up with Halton Council to carry out groundbreaking research into the protection of vulnerable adults.

The Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults in Halton project looks at the investigation process which takes place following an allegation of abuse, from the viewpoint of both service users and carers.

In 2000 the Government document No Secrets recommended the views of service users and carers should be recorded and acted upon.

For two-and-a-half years, research fellows Joan Darwin and Lisa Pickering undertook 200 face-to-face anonymous interviews to gather information and opinions.

It is believed to be the first study which considers information from service users and carers who have experienced an investigation of alleged abuse.
