A WASTE company has signed a £160m deal to build the second phase of an incinerator in Runcorn.
Viridor Waste Management Ltd put pen to paper for the procurement contract with engineering and waste firm Keppel Seghers.
It is expected to be in use by 2014-15.
The energy-from-waste (EFW) plant is being built for Ineos Chlor. The chemical giant predicts 20% the incinerator to provide 20% of its Weston Point site needs.
Viridor secured the development rights to Phase II of the facility in April 2009.
The first phase, which will burn refuse-derived-fuel (RDF) from Greater Manchester, was completed last August.
Phase II will be available for the general market.
EFW is seen by some as a means of avoiding rising landfill costs.
Viridor will invest £160m to build the 375 tonnes-per-year capacity plant.
This is in addition to £34m paid for preparation and shared work for both phases.
