Members of Widnes Historical Society paid a four-day trip to Belgium to mark the forthcoming centenary of the Great War’s outbreak.
The group visited Bruges and numerous First World War sites in Belgium.
Members were present at the Menin Gate in Ypres and observed the last post ceremony which takes place every evening in the town.
The service proved to be an emotional experience with choirs from both Britain and Belgium taking part and the ceremony concluded with the national anthems from both countries being played.
Some members found names of relatives enscribed on the memorial and poppy wreaths were placed at the cenotaph.
The visit also included tours of British, Canadian and German battlefield cemeteries and while members enjoyed the visit, most were left with the sad impression of the futility of war.
